danger will robinson

I have been  meaning to write a post about Maltitol and then the funny ladies over at Does This Blog Make Us Look Fat beat me to the punch.  I feel like it bears repeating, or at least pointing people to their funny post.

Maltitol is a sugar alcohol that is being used in a number of sweet low carb/low sugar/sugar free creations.  As a recovering low carber, I'm pretty well versed in all of the 'sugar free' and 'low carb' options out there.  The good, the bad and the disgusting.  (editors note: this is not a rant on low carbing-just one particular ingredient-do what works!)

Do you know that the splenda symbol on an ingredient does not mean that splenda is the only sugar alcohol used?  Edy's (or Dryers) No Sugar Added Ice cream proudly displays "Splenda" on the front of the packaging, but when you look at the ingredients you are in for a big surprise.  While Splenda is there, check out all of the other sugar alcohols! Yikes.

INGREDIENTS: skim milk, cream, cookie dough pieces [wheat flour, lactitol*, eggs, butter, chocolaty chips (lactitol, coconut oil, cocoa processed with alkali, bitter chocolate, cocoa, soy lecithin, natural flavor, sucralose (Splenda® Brand)), coconut oil, salt, natural and artificial flavors], maltitol syrup*, maltodextrin, polydextrose*, chocolaty chips (lactitol*, coconut oil, cocoa processed with alkali, bitter chocolate, cocoa, soybean oil, soy lecithin, natural flavor, sucralose (Splenda® Brand)), glycerin, natural flavor, milk minerals concentrate, cellulose gum, mono and diglycerides, salt, sorbitol*, guar gum, sucralose (Splenda® Brand), carrageenan, citric acid, vitamin A palmitate, annatto color, acesulfame potassium

I target Maltitol for a reason. Personal experiences.  Bad personal experiences.  Excessive consumption of maltitol causes gastrointestinal distress and gastrointestinal distress, well....It is not pretty!  So, you think, OK I’ll stay away from those sketchy low carb frankenfoods.  Alas, that is not the only concern!  Awhile ago Dan was eating some protein bars and feeling, ‘off’.  So, we looked at the ingredient list….MATLTITOL.  Oh yes, and this is a protein bar targeted at althletic people.  People that aren’t counting their sugar grams and net carbs.  yikes!

So kind people, please look for this ingredient and well, run!  (or eat in extreme moderation)  I’d rather gain the weight than deal with the side effects.  It is also laboratory generated ‘foods’ like this that make me think twice about what I put in my mouth and think that ‘real food’ is probably the direction I’m headed.

Seeing as we are talking about not yummy topics, I’m gonna avoid a food picture this go around!

What ingredient do you make sure to avoid?
